Today, (Sunday 5th June), is World Environment Day and this year the theme is “Go Wild for Life”. WED gives us a good chance to look at how we treat the environment and see what we can do to make things a little bit better.
As a family and as a business, we try our best to be aware of our impact on the environment and to minimise our impact. We ensure that our suppliers uphold the same ethical standards as we do, and that our packaging is biodegradable.
On a more personal note, over the last few weeks, daughter and I have been experimenting with a vegan diet. To all you confirmed meat eaters – it is not actually as hard or as daunting as I expected. In fact it has opened up a whole new world to us. Having been stuck in a cooking rut, it is very refreshing to try a completely different attitude to food. We can both confirm that we do feel healthier and more energetic as a result, which is an unexpected bonus. Instead of feeling restricted, we have discovered a wider range of foods have opened up. On the downside, it does take more thought and planning, especially when we are going to be out for the day or in social situations.
Although we started as a bit of an experiment and not for any moral reasons, we have become so much more aware of the implications, and to be honest, we have come to enjoy the lifestyle.
Apparently veganism is one of the fastest growing lifestyle movements, possibly due to more information being readily available. A quick look on Pinterest or Instagram reveals a wide variety of tempting vegan dishes.
Was it difficult making the change?
Nowhere near as difficult as I expected and in fact it is quite an exciting challenge! I like the effect is has on my overall health and wellbeing and don’t crave the foods I thought I would.
Will we continue along the vegan path?
At the moment I can say that we are planning to remain predominantly vegan, however I am not sure that we are ready to commit to being 100%
Do I feel guilty about having the odd latte?
No, I don’t feel the need to deny myself, but sometimes will opt for the soya milk version and feel better for it.
Do I actually crave meat and dairy products?
No not really, and when I do have them now it does not make me feel that good.
